silly heads

I just realised I never told about what happened when I went into my former bishop's office to resign in person.

I couldn't find his office at first, because the building was old and convoluted. I finally found it, and this old, quite stodgy looking man gestured me into his office.

I sat down, and handed him the letter, saying, "I came to give you this."

He looked at it, rather cursorily, and then asked me if I were aware of the "consequences" of this action. I assured him I was. He then continued by telling me of the "procedure" required to "excommunicate myself from the church."

He did not believe me that as soon as I handed him my letter I was no longer a member. He claimed the church still had "jurisdiction" over me (i.e. my soul), and not so subtly insinuated something about the church excommunicating me. He was kind of mumbling at the time, so I'm not quite sure where he was going with that.

I told him that I expected no further contact, and that I knew what my legal rights were. He obviously did not, and continued to threaten me. I told him to be careful, as what he was threatening was illegal, and I could technically sue the church. Then he half-yelled at me, "Don't you try and threaten ME (boy)!"

He also asked me, quite gruffly, if I were certain that I had come to the right ward. I told him to look at my address, and then he muttered, glaring at me, "At least you did one thing right."

Oh, and he kept correcting me when I said "resign from the church". He said each time, "you mean excommunicate yourself", or "get yourself kicked out".

It was all so melodramatic and stereotypical. Just like you expect an old, crusty Utah Mormon bishop to be.

It was also really funny. I thought so anyways.

Well at least the church wanted to make one last good impression on you. And i was worried that a bishop might send you off making the church seem angry and bitter.

Nice! Kudos for resigning in person AND threatening to sue. I wouldn't have dared.

I love how absolutely ridiculous the whole resignation process is. It's perfectly in character with everything else, unfortunately.

Wow, you got a winner of a bishop there. I can only hope it was just an awful day for him... though it's a faithless hope.
